The Anchorage Museum focuses on Alaskan history with a combined emphasis on art, history, culture and science. It began in 1968 as a partnership between public and private interests, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alaska’s purchase from Russia. Its original collection was entirely borrowed, consisting of 60 Alaska paintings and over 2,000 historic artifacts belonging to the local historical society. Cyrano’s Theatre Company, founded in 1995, is the resident company at Cyrano’s Off-Center Playhouse. The company is committed to nurturing Alaska’s own talented artists and giving them a place to grow and thrive as theater professionals. In the 30 years since its inception, the Juneau-based Perseverance Theatre has established itself as Alaska’s premiere theater company. In addition to producing both classic and modern works on its two stages, PT offers many educational, training, and community programs, touring productions, and the Beyond Heritage Native Festival. Alaska Chamber Singers was formed in 1986 and has been under the direction of David Hagen since 1995. Since its inception, ACS has been one of the finest choral ensembles in Alaska, with over 40 auditioned members. Performance highlights include appearing at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, broadcasting from the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Founded in 1946 as a small community orchestra of seventeen, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra has blossomed into a vibrant part of Alaska’s cultural landscape, with almost 80 members and a large repertoire. While the Symphony only stages a handful of concerts each season, the programming is impeccable and adventurous. Maestro Randall Fleischer acts as Music Director for the orchestra and under his leadership, the ensemble has risen to new levels …more…
When you’re an opera company nearly 1,500 miles from any other major cultural center and draw from a population base of barely 250,000 people, how do you build an audience?

ADT was founded in 1981 and is the Resident Dance Company at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Under the guiding hand of Artistic Director Alice Bassler Sullivan, the Anchorage-based company’s 22 dancers perform new works (by both resident and dance choreographers) in three repertory concerts each year.

Alaska’s comprehensive multi-arts complex contains four functioning performing spaces, ranging in size from 2,000 seats (the Atwood Concert Hall) to 180 seats (Elvera Voth Hall). Events and offerings at the Alaska Center include symphonic, chamber and popular music productions, opera, dance, and theater of all types. In addition, the facility hosts space for lectures, recitals, public meetings and a variety of other purposes.

This progressive multi-arts organization presents visual, literary, multimedia, and performance art, with an emphasis on giving voice to the underrepresented, including artists of color, artists with disabilities, and LGBT artists. A given season at Out North might include plays, solo shows, multi-disciplinary performances pieces, and other unique theatrical experiences.
